This holiday weekend provides a great opportunity to relax, maybe play a round of golf, have a BBQ, or visit with family and friends. It’s also a great reason to pause and remember why we have a day off.
Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who have died in service of the United States of America. It is not a celebration, but rather a day of formal reflection over the cost of freedom; the freedom to speak our mind, to vote, to live where we choose, to be anything we choose to be.
Here are some ways you can honor the men and women who have given their lives for the freedoms we enjoy:
- Place flags or flowers on a soldier, sailor, or Marine’s grave
- Fly the American flag at half-staff until noon
- Visit a monument dedicated to military personnel
- Participate in the National Moment of Remembrance, which was ratified in December 2000 and asks that at 3 p.m. local time, all Americans “voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a moment of remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to Taps.”
Enjoy the weekend doing whatever it is that you enjoy, but please don’t forget to honor those who helped to make it possible.
